John von Bergen's body of work spans over three decades. His early works, produced in the late 1960s and early 1970s, were figures. In the 1970s, welded steel sculpture and pole structures characterized his sculptures. His abstract and volumetric bronzes emerged during the 1980s, and continues to this day. His artistic versatility is also represented in numerous commission pieces he has created over the course of his impressive career.
